Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30

Inc. Magazine recently posted an article they did on the “Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30“. I love articles like these, not only do they focus on the young new talent in marketing, but it always inspires me with a ton of new motivation and ideas. When you look over the list of site names, I’m sure you will come across at least one or two that you may know. What may surprise you is how much the web site is generating, but even more so, who is running them and how young they may be.

When I first looked over the list, I was already familiar with most of the sites and had previously read up on these young entrepreneurs elsewhere. One name on the list that stood out to me was Raj Lahoti, who runs DMV.org and now generating over $11.5 million a year. I first met with Raj at Affiliate Force 2002, which was also my first speaking conference (which was held on a cruise). Raj and I had a lot in common, we are the same age and talked about our decisions on whether or not to attend college, how much both of us loved to do business online and much more. It was pretty cool to see someone my age (at the time I was only 20) with the same passion and experience I had for making money online.

Ah.. back when we were young… very young!

After Affiliate Force, Raj and I kept in touch and sent a few ideas back and forth while keeping each other updating on our latest money making adventures. Then around a year later, Raj sent me an email asking for me to look over DMV.org and offer any ideas I might have had for improving the sites earnings or user experience. He mentioned that his brother had the domain and he was going to focus on building it up as his main focus, and it was already receiving a lot of search traffic from DMV related searches. I remember the site was a lot more simplistic back in 2003 when he first showed me the site, and now it’s a main source for anyone searching on DMV or anything relating to driving… not to mention a mega multi-million dollar money maker! Congrats Raj, I knew you were heading towards the top!

As for the rest of the list, you’d be surprised at how much some of these smaller company / sites are earning in annual revenues. Read through the site and examine their business ideas. See what amazing ideas you can come up with and maybe next year you will make the list!

MediaWhiz Acquires AuctionAds

Well… it didn’t take long and I’m not too surprised, but Jeremy Shoemoney’s AuctionAds network was just acquired by MediaWhiz. The purchase price was not disclosed, but speculation from some sites and forums put the deal in the $5-$10 million range.(pure speculation) I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was more. Some current numbers on AuctionAds’ network are around: 25,000 affiliates, 300M impressions a day, $1 Million a month in revenue. Ebay probably could have saved themselves a nice amount of cash if they picked up the network, while MediaWhiz made the most of an excellent opportunity. Full Shoemoney and TechCrunch article here.

Earlier this month I reported how I earned over $1,500 last month with AuctionAds. This month so far has been another story and the tracking looks like a mess. My daily click and earnings numbers for this month are all over the place. With such sporadic numbers in place it makes it very hard to see what type of traffic is producing what revenue. I can only hope MediaWhiz will rapidly put their money and tech management to work as soon as possible to correct these tracking problems and sporadic downtime soon. Congrats to Shoe and AuctionAds group on this fast and successful startup/sale!

Last month I did well with AuctionAds, but this month numbers are on the low end

Will affiliates of AuctionAds continue to see the same earnings… or better/worse?

Most Expensive Domain Names

Every year Forbes comes out with these great lists for the "World Richest People", "World’s Richest Billionaires" and even more specific one’s like "World’s Richest Supermodels". They always get me with their top 500 richest issue, I like to keep track of the who’s moved up and down… and why. In addition to profiling the world’s richest people, Forbe’s also reports on some other great niches, like "Top 5 Most Expensive Domains". Below is there list of top selling domains… don’t you wish you picked these up back in the 90’s!

ALT 1. Sex.com
$12 million

Originally registered by Gary Kremen, a Silicon Valley software salesman, in 1994. Sold in a private sale for a mixture of cash and stock to Boston-based Escom LLC in January 2005.
ALT 2. Porn.com
$9.5 million

MXN Limited bought its way into the porn industry in May. Brokered by Moniker.com, the deal stands as the largest all-cash URL transaction ever.
ALT 3. Business.com
$7.5 million

Sold to ECompanies Venture Group, headed by former Disney executive Jake Weinbaum, in 1999. Yet even the highly prized name couldn’t protect the business from the dot-com bust; the site is now a parking lot for other URLs.
ALT 4. Diamond.com
$7.5 million

Odimo sold this jewel of a site–along with its jewelry inventory–to Ice.com, an online retailer, in May 2006. Ice.com paid cash for the site and an extra $2 million for Odimo’s bling.
ALT 5. Beer.com
$7 million

Originally owned by Bill Fisher, a Web site developer who also owned Budweiser.com and Guinness.com. Sold to Belgium-based Interbrew, the world’s second-largest brewer by volume, the site now features racy content aimed at a male audience.

If you missed out on these domains, don’t feel bad. There are still plenty of domains being sold for thousands upon thousands of dollars. Just when I was at Affiliate Summit East, Moniker held a live domain auction and "AffiliateDirectory.com" went for an insane $30,000! It’s a good name, but I didn’t think it was that great. You’d be surprised what’s selling for what. Whether you are buying domains to flip and sell, or build them up as established web sites, there is still an ever increasing demand for quality names and you never know who just might want yours next!

Niche Marketing with Blogs

Over the past few days I have been fooling around with the idea of "niche" marketing and have been setting up a few smaller blogs. So far I have made five different niche targeted sites, and am gradually adding content to each. I know they all won’t perform, but I am pushing towards a few different markets and hoping a few stick. Over the next couple weeks I will keep an eye on stats and do some testing to see which blogs are pulling in traffic and converting. Once I can weed out the bad sites, I can focus on the good ones and continually monetize them and start promoting them through ppc marketing. Anyone else try (and have success) setting up "niche" based blogs for marketing purposes?

Think you are maxed out in your market, or looking for some new niche ideas? You’d be surprised how many untapped markets there are for making some big money. Here are just a few areas that you could start making money in!

apartment finder computer furniture florida vacations lung cancer symptoms
second mortgages calorie counter aerobed passport application
winsor pilates canon ink cartridge pda software inventory software
