Facebook is quickly approaching the 1 billion members mark, and it’s also growing daily as a new revenue source for affiliate and online marketers. Through Facebook Ads, advertisers can target nearly all members of Facebook based on their demographics and interests. There has been a lot of discussion on Facebook and their privacy settings lately. This article will discuss the latest FTC settlement with Facebook. It seems like Facebook is always in the news for something, but they just keep growing and chugging along… is Facebook too big to fail?

On November 29, 2011, the Federal Trade Commission settled allegations that Facebook violated Section 5 of the FTC Act by virtue of its privacy practices. The FTC’s enforcement action against Facebook is a clear example of the FTC’s efforts to ensure that websites live up to the privacy promises they make to consumers and that Facebook’s innovations will not come at the expense of consumer privacy.

The FTC’s complaint alleges that Facebook engaged in unfair trade practices by repeatedly failing to conform to its own promises regarding privacy to its hundreds of millions of users. Specifically, the FTC alleges that although Facebook informed customers that they could “control who can see” their profile information by using privacy settings to restrict access to their profiles, these settings did not prevent certain third party applications from accessing their profile information.

The Commission also alleges that Facebook:

Made changes to its website that made public, information that users previously designated as private, without adequate notice;

Represented that third party applications would only be able to access profile information that was necessary to operate the application, but were oftentimes given unlimited access to consumer’s profile information;

Provided advertisers with information about users despite promises that it would not do so; and

Represented that users profile information, including photos and videos, would be in accessible upon deletion of accounts. However, Facebook continued to allow third parties to access such content after accounts were deactivated or deleted.

The alleged violations of Section 5 of the FTC Act also include a failure to comply with the substantive privacy requirements of the United States-European Union Safe Harbor Framework, a voluntary framework that allows companies to transfer personal data from the European Union to the United States in compliance with European Union law. Since at least 2009, Facebook has maintained self-certification with the Department of Commerce under the Safe Harbor program, under which it has declared its compliance with the seven Safe Harbor privacy principles in its public Privacy Policy and on the U.S. Department of Commerce website. In its complaint, the FTC alleged that Facebook failed to comply with the Safe Harbor principles of Notice and Choice that required it to inform individuals about all the purposes for which it collected their data and to give those individuals a choice about how their information would be used.

Pursuant to the terms of the proposed settlement, Facebook is barred from further misrepresenting its privacy practices and is required to obtain opt-in consent from users prior to making changes that override their privacy preferences. Facebook must also ensure that a user’s information cannot be accessed by anyone after a reasonable period of time, not to exceed 30 days, following the user’s deletion of his or her account, and implement a comprehensive program that protects the privacy and confidentiality of users’ information. Lastly, Facebook must obtain independent privacy compliance audits every two years for the next twenty years, certifying that it has a privacy program in place that satisfies the requirements of the FTC consent decree.

According to Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, the company will create two new corporate officer position, Chief Privacy Policy Officer and Chief Privacy Products Officer.

Inasmuch as the FTC has recently agreed to consent decrees with both Google and Twitter involving record keeping obligations, the FTC now appears to possess regulatory oversight over the privacy and data security practices of the big three social networking companies in the United States.

Newman, an Internet attorney that specializes in performance marketing and regulatory compliance at Hinch Newman LLP in New York, New York.

The ability to target an audience based on their demographic data, but also their “interests“, makes Facebook Ads still one of the best ad platforms out there, if not the best. Through “interest” targeting, you can build campaigns that are focused on exactly what the user is interested in, which leads to a higher click through rate and more conversions.

Focusing on music artists, I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 music artists on Facebook and listed them below.

1. Eminem – 43,597,895

2. Rihanna – 40,970,115

3. Lady Gaga – 40,845,124

4. Shakira – 37,267,475

5. Justin Bieber – 33,219,214

6. Linkin Park – 32,525,479

7. Katy Perry – 32,218,637

8. Lil Wayne – 29,169,770

9. Bob Marley – 28,719,894

10. Akon – 27,966,380

So now that you have this information, what can you do with it?

The easy answer is to build an ad campaign which targets to each of these Facebook groups. Select an affiliate offer (such as free iPod/iPhone) and build a landing page that is built specifically for each target audience.

If you are lucky enough, you might be able to find an ad campaign that was already built specifically for your celebrity of choice. While looking through oDigger, I was able to pull up the following Zip Submit offer for Lady Gaga.

Get creative and see what you can do to build campaigns around celebrities, movies and music artists. Facebook just makes it too easy to target these audiences. Your job is to make sure the campaigns convert and back out into a profit.

When it comes to the users of Facebook, average users and internet marketers both see the social network in two completely different lights. The average user can’t wait to see the latest status updates and photos from their “friends”. While the internet marketer can’t wait to tap into the latest set of demographics and targets for new users and to create a new stream of ad campaigns to flow through the hundreds of millions of users currently on Facebook.

No matter if you are just an addicted user of Facebook, or currently mastering their Facebook Ads platform as a revenue source, you should find the following stats and information quite amazing.

With Facebook planning to launch their IPO stock later in the year, will the growth and success of Facebook keep jumping higher and higher. Does Facebook deserve a $50 BILLION evaluation? Only time will tell, but I’d like to think so… and these astounding numbers don’t lie.

The following infographic is from the latest issue of FastCompany, in an article called “The Business of Facebook“. One of my favorite points in the infographics is “Analysts estimate that Facebook pulled in $1.86 BILLION in advertising in 2010. That’s expected to grow 118% this year, to $4 billion.“… how much of this is due to affiliate marketing, and how will Facebook Ads continue to change their ad platform, advertising policies and feelings towards affiliate marketing?

Yes, Facebook Ads can be extremely tough to master and very frustrating with the ad approval process. Not to mention you can actually blow through a lot of money fast if you don’t know what you are doing. However, how can you turn your back on a ad platform that allows you to target over 600 million people all over the world based on their demographics and interests.

I always find myself coming back to Facebook and running new ad campaigns. Most lose money, but when you get something that works, it’s really great. Sometimes I even surprise myself with new ad creatives and targeting groups that I come up with, and also seeing what makes people click. I wanted to share some numbers that I’ve seen in the past month while playing around with a new campaign. The greatest part about this latest campaign, was the ability to create some really phenomenal ad copy that people loved, but more importantly… almost getting clicks for free, and the majority in the .01-.o2 range.

Facebook Ads Clicks for Pennies

Below are the stats from one of my top ad campaigns based on US only traffic. Demographics range from 13-27 years old, male/female and covered various combinations of demographics and interests. You will also see that many of these ads were pulling in click through rates of .40%-.62%, which is extremely well for Facebook advertising. Some creatives were even pulling 1% click through rates at times.

A final summary of the US ad campaign stats are shown below. With nearly 10 million impressions shown, the campaign ended with 29,836 clicks and only spent $213.63 on ad costs. That comes out to less than one cent per click!

Targeting the US is one of the most expensive markets you can go after on Facebook, but in the end it all comes down to click through rates. I copied the same success I had with my US campaign and played around with the demographic and interest targeting a bit more, then had the same type of success in CANADA and the UK. You can see the full stats below.

Facebook Ads Tips for Success

I’m sure all of you are wondering what creatives, ad copy and actual web site or cpa I was promoting. Unfortunately that would just be shooting myself in the foot and killing the campaign if I was to release that type of information. Instead, I will provide the exact tips and monetization I used to create ad copy with these numbers.

Target your Facebook Ads in very small groups. Yes, this is a pain, but it’s how you will achieve the greatest click through rates. If you don’t want to do break down a campaign by every age individually, break it out within three to five years, then that the first set of stats to see if it’s worth breaking down again. (ie: males 18-21, males 22-25, males 26-29 etc…)

Target by interest. This one is a no brainer, but it’s important to keep stressing your targeted interest in the ad copy. For instance, if you are going to target “The Simpsons“, try and use something relating to The Simpsons as your image, in your title and description.

Use Great Pictures. Facebook ads are all about the headline and the image, but which of the two really grabs your eye first… the picture of course! Try to use only the highest quality pictures that are sized correctly for Facebook ads placement, which is 110×80. If you can crop or design images, there are a ton of places that will do this for a few dollars. It really makes a big difference to have a great “call to action” image on your ads. (Dating = Hot Girls, Email Submits = Exciting Products, Travel = Landmarks)

CPC vs. CPM bidding. Using the statistics from the campaign above, I was mainly using CPM as my bidding model… however I did first test with CPC. Facebook Ads runs all of their inventory based on ad spend and user click through rate. If I initially setup these ad campaigns at a CPC model and put in .01 or .02 per click, Facebook would likely have never even given me any impressions. By bidding on the CPM model, Facebook knows they are going to make money no matter what. First test with CPC, get an idea on what people are clicking on, then back it out to CPM bidding.

Limit Your Losses and Ad Spending. When I first start a new campaign through Facebook Ads, I’m always anxious to get the first set of results. Sometimes the traffic comes in slow, and some times it’s an avalanche. Fortunately Facebook allows you to set a budget for how much you want to spend on your campaign per day. If you are adding a lot of new campaigns, be sure to set a low daily limit for each. As you learn which campaigns are making you money, make sure to increase your daily limits as this will determine the amount of traffic you will receive from Facebook.

Use Social / “Likes” to your advantage. Want to create a campaign or creative that people really like? Come up with something that people are truly interested in and will want to share with your friends. How many times did you “Like” a product, fan page or ad on Facebook because you saw one of your friends listed as liking it? I’m sure it had a big influence on your decision, as it has been proven to work time and time again. Create a killer product or service that people really like, and they will share it with their friends, while being seen as a “fan” of your product/service. You can also stop your ads from being seen by people who are already “fans” of your product, which you can’t do with generic Facebook ads.

Making Facebook Ads Work for You

No matter what type of Facebook ads campaign you create, if you follow these rules, you will have more success than just throwing up as many different ads as you can, and hoping for one of them to work. While it is tough to continually make money with Facebook ads, you need to put in the necessary work on adding new campaigns, targeting new niches and demographics. Follow these tips to improve your chances of success with Facebook Ads.

I came across this article today, called “Facebook ‘accidentally outing gay users’ to outside firms through targeted ads“, which I thought was kind of interesting, simply because this use of demographic targeting as a method of advertising has been used for years now. As an advertiser on Facebook Ads, it’s a no brainer that you can target your ad campaigns to an insanely specific demographics, and “sexual preference” being one of them. Obviously, if you are advertising to “Males” and their preference is set at “Males”… then one might correctly assume they are gay, so advertising “Gay” dating campaigns (for example) is an effective way to advertise to this demographic. It’s really no different than other demographic, single, married, etc. Apparently this is new to the rest of the world however and note worthy of a story about privacy protection.

The articles goes on to say “The discovery could mean that people who wish to keep their sexuality private may be sharing it with advertisers without their knowledge.“. However, I would think if this was the case, and people were concerned about their sexual preference being known to others… why post that information to Facebook in the first place… it’s only the largest social network in the world?

I understand in light of the recent news stories on cyber bullying, having your privacy protected is important, and it’s now in the news more than ever after the tragic Tyler Clementi story, where a Rutgers student, committed suicide after having a video released of his sexual encounter.

I was actually at Rutgers today and spoke with a few students and was explaining to them about how the advertisements on Facebook work, and how what you see as an advertisement is strictly based on your demographics and interests. Many of them were completely ignorant of this and were blown away when told. They had no idea that the demographic information they voluntarily provided to Facebook actually drove the ads they saw. Even though it should be so very obvious to the user at some points. Change your status to “engaged”, and all you will see are ads based on weddings, gowns and wedding planning. The same holds true for many other demographic/status changes.

What seems like simple knowledge to us (Internet marketers), that being targeting users by demographics, and using that targeting information to provide the user a better experience by focusing information on topics they are most interested in, this appears to be foreign to the everyday user that willingly provides their demographic details in the first place.
Bottom line is… while targeting to demographics is as old as marketing itself, the Internet marketing world is a whole new world to the user we market to. What are your thoughts on this article and targeting towards demographics, and is the information Facebook allows it’s advertisers to target to actually a privacy issue?

Right on Facebook’s privacy policy the following appears:

To serve personalized advertising to you. We don’t share your information with advertisers without your consent. (An example of consent would be if you asked us to provide your shipping address to an advertiser to receive a free sample.) We allow advertisers to choose the characteristics of users who will see their advertisements and we may use any of the non-personally identifiable attributes we have collected (including information you may have decided not to show to other users, such as your birth year or other sensitive personal information or preferences) to select the appropriate audience for those advertisements. For example, we might use your interest in soccer to show you ads for soccer equipment, but we do not tell the soccer equipment company who you are. You can see the criteria advertisers may select by visiting our advertising page. Even though we do not share your information with advertisers without your consent, when you click on or otherwise interact with an advertisement there is a possibility that the advertiser may place a cookie in your browser and note that it meets the criteria they selected.

How much responsibility does the user have to be aware of how information they provide may be used? Nothing “accidental” with this privacy issue, it’s all out in the open if one bothers to read it.

Bottom line #2: In every case, be an informed user…… what are your thoughts?

Right on Facebook’s privacy policy the following appears:

To serve personalized advertising to you. We don’t share your information with advertisers without your consent.

Facebook has now destroyed every other web site on the internet. Passing other major search engines like Yahoo and Bing, leaving YouTube in it’s track and now it’s only real competition is Google. With over 400 million users on Facebook and 510 BILLION page views per month, how can you not be taking advantage of advertising on their network? Now is the time to focus on Facebook advertising, as they are wiping out the crap affiliate offers and sending more quality traffic to legitimate offers and web sites.

My friend Jonathan Volk just released his “Facebook Ads Guide” which walks you through the simple and complete process of setting up a Facebook Ads campaign, then through the advanced stages of improving your click through rate and breaking down your campaigns by demographics, interest targeting and location.

I’m sure you’ve seen these Facebook ads… but do you know how they make money?

I’ll be honest, the Facebook Ads Guide is perfect for anyone that hasn’t made a full attempt at being successful on Facebook Ads, but less for the well trained or successful Facebook marketers. On the flip side, Jon also offers a Facebook Affiliate Mastermind Video presentation as an upsell to the guide. During the launch promotion, this upsell is 75% off and only an extra $37. It would be tough to justify buying the guide and passing up on the additional videos.

It’s not just a guide, the bonus Facebook Ads reports and pdf files is where the goodies are! As mentioned, I went through the Facebook Ads Guide and was familiar with everything in the book, but after looking over the additional pdf files, it brought some extra value to the guide. Here’s is what’s included in the total package.

Facebook Ads Guide with BONUSES
* Bonus 1: Facebook Affiliate Offers Guide

* Bonus 4: Keyword Targeting List
Special Facebook keyword list formulated to help you target SPECIFIC people groups that you normally cannot target!

Be sure to watch the video below to get a full run down on how Jonathan has made over 1 MILLION dollars using Facebook Ads within only a few months. Jon also goes into detail on what his Facebook Ads Guide has to offer.

For a limited time, Jonathan is selling his Facebook Ads Guide for only $79 as part of an early bird promotion. On Thursday the price will bounce back up to $97.

Facebook advertising is a lucrative advertising platform where a lot of affiliates and advertisers are making a lot of money from. The reason why some are making the boat loads of cash is because they are creating ads geared towards a users interests.

It is another reason why so many fail on Facebook. Every person that advertises on Facebook for the first time or several times are very general when it comes to their ad and audience.

It is important to think like the user and not just put an ad out there base on an interests. One strategy that I use is to combine multiple interests to create an ad they are already comfortable with. Creating an ad base on the users environment can catch their eye more than a general ad.

The power of Facebook relies with their amazing way to target users. So it is in our best interests as affiliate to take advantage of these interests. By combining interests with another interests you grow the chances of the actual user clicking on your ad.

For example a user ‘likes’ the Simpsons and Family Guy. These are listed in their interests and is publicly noticed on their profile. You can easily create and ad with a headline saying “Simpsons vs Family Guy.” Your image can be Homer Simpson facing Peter Griffin.

You can even split test images with Maggie Simpson and Stewie Griffin, Marge Simpson and Louis Griffin – can you see the idea here. We are combining their likes to create an ad made for the person it is meant for.

Already you can see how this ad can get a high CTR base on the users favorite characters of the show. Since the user likes both shows, we are creating a conflict of interests to the user in which case they are going to be curious of what to think and read through your ad and most likely click through.

Utilizing a users interests and likes can work to your benefit. The days of advertising and making an ad generalizing the public is no more with Facebook. You can dig deep into a user and utilize their favorite shows, games, celebrities, and other likes to better suite your ads.

Creating an ad made for the user gives you a higher chance of visibility, which can lead to a high CTR, which in turn can mean profit or a lead to you. That sense of their environment will work in your favor because they are already comfortable with what they like.

Loyal fans will always be protective and curious to see what others have to say about their favorite football player or celebrity. It is in our nature to stick to our favorites until we find a replacement to our own likes.

One of the largest groups of “interests” in Facebook, is television shows and movies. What’s also great about this target audience, is that if you are going to post a show as your interest, it’s likely you are pretty passionate about the show, and anything relating to it would catch your eye.

Here’s a list on some of the top TV shows and their target audience size.

As you can see, these are some pretty serious numbers, and that’s only a handful of TV shows to choose from. InsideFacebook wrote a post today about how TV shows dominate Facebook interests, and gives even more detail on the growth of these interests over a weekly basis. If you click any of the interest names above, you will also be sent to the InsideFacebook stats page for that individual interest, where you can see a growth chart of fans and view the office fan page.

So what’s the big deal about targeting TV shows anyway, it’s not like you can make money off telling people to go watch the show on TV? While that’s true, and the idea of trying to sell DVD sets to users for a small commission also won’t work… it does leave a lot of room for creativity. If you were a company like Blockbuster or NetFlix, you could target this audience and send them to a relative landing page with their specific shows of interest and try to convert them into the member. I’ve tried this with their affiliate offers and the conversions were low, but there was clicks and a lot of interest.

Another option is to build your creatives or landing pages around an offer. Several times I have seen a completely irrelevant offer being advertised, but with a Homer Simpson or South Park cartoon. It wasn’t relevant, but it did catch my eye… this is also something that can be played with.

It’s time to get creative with your advertising. How many TV shows do you have in your Facebook interests, and is anyone targeting ads in your direction?

How dumb is Farmville? If the concept of building a fake farm, planting seeds every few hours and trying to collect enough tools to build a horse stable sounds like a fun or silly idea, you are not along. Over 80 million users are now playing Farmville on Facebook, and nearly 30 million users are logging in daily. Zynga, the creators of Farmville are cashing in and making millions. While Farmville may seem like a dumb idea, it’s a massive cash cow and it’s no where near slowing down.

As reported by Mashable, “FarmVille’s daily active user count is currently 29.7 million — that’s almost 30 million people using FarmVille every day.” Even more amazing, is that FarmVille’s parent company, Zynga, was valued at 1 billion dollars late last year.

Zynga / Farmville makes their money from users completing offers to receive bonus cash for their in game play. To explain this best, it’s what affiliate marketing is all about. Farmville is simply pushing affiliate offers, and rewarding their users with game currency (no real physical product).

This is great for Zynga, but how can everyone else jump on the bandwagon and make some extra money. With over 80 million users, and growing by an expected 10 million every month, “Farmville” has become a brand you can piggy back off of. Here are just a few ideas on how you can start making money off the Farmville craze.

Farmville Facebook Targetting
It’s no secret that Facebook offers one of the best demographic targetting ad systems around. Targetting towards applications and games is no different. If you can find a products, game or sites that current Farmville users are interested, simply target this demographic and be seen.

Creating an Ebook
Gamers are hardcore about their success, and Farmville is no exception. I’ve seen a lot of “Farmville Advancement” ebooks and guides over the past several months, just like guides for getting gold and leveling on World of WarCraft have been around for years. With 80 million users, there isn’t much of a saturation point. See what’s currently out there, make it better and cheaper and compete.

Web Site with Information
Just like an ebook or guide, you can do the same process for creating a web site. Through a web site you can build up a mailing list, fans, push other Farmville ebook products and more. I have seen a fair amount of Farmville ebooks and sites for sale on Flippa, and have also heard of Zynga sending out C&Ds to sites using the Farmville name in their products and domain names. Be careful if you are choosing this path.

A Completely New Idea
Don’t be discouraged that you may be behind the Farmville trend, it’s still growing strong. Someone is going to come up with the next great Farmville idea and cash in big time. Whether it’s a replica app/game, or ebook/training site… there is plenty of room for competition and earnings.

In the end, there are a lot of different ang;e for you to tap the Farmville market place. Don’t forget, Farmville is the largest game on Facebook, but there are several others with millions of users. Take what’s working with Farmville and target it to a smaller crowed. Remember, you only need a very small percentage of 80 million users to take action or use your product to find success.

Do you Farmville?
