Last month I did a write up on the new ClickBooth CPC program, an ad platform based on serving advertisements on your web site or blog, and paying on a cpc basis. You can read the full post here. I also mentioned that I would be running their ads on a few sites to see how they perform. It’s been around ten days, so let’s take a look at the numbers.

First let’s take a look at how ClickBooth CPC performed on a decent sized entertainment web site. Keep in mind the banner was not in a prominent location and the majority of users are coming to the site for celebrity pictures, videos and game content.

Lots of impressions were served, but not many clicks were recevied. I’m not that surprised, as the banner wasn’t right in the users face and due to the offers available through ClickBooth CPC, not many of these ads were relevant at all to the entertainment niche. Take away here is… 16 clicks, $2.25 in revenue, which comes out to .14 per click. Not that great of a test, but that’s why we test! I think these numbers would be much better if the ad copy and advertisers were more relevant to the content. It would also be nice to see which advertisements were being clicks and where the cpc earnings were from.

Next let’s take a look at the ClickBooth CPC ads served on ZacJohnson.com. One unit was placed in the actual “ClickBooth CPC Review Post”, while the other was served on the right sidebar, which the user needed to scroll down to see.

Much better results than on the entertainment test above, and roughly a .55 ecpm average. This test campaign obviously performed better because the banner was right in the users face and a bit more relevant since it’s a business blog, with “biz / make money” related ads being served by CB CPC. 50 clicks, $6.52 revenue, with a .13 average.

Lastly we have the results from the sidebar ad placement. Actually slightly better than I expected, as the user had to scroll down a decent amount to see this ad spot. 38 clicks, $6.93 revenue, with a .18 cpc average.

It’s always good to run test cases for new advertising platforms. In this situation, I don’t think I would stick with these banner placements because I can sell advertising directly at a much higher rate, then trying to push CPA related offers to a targeted audience. Also take into consideration that I gave the CB CPC ad placements very poor position and did not try to monetize at all, as this was a quick test run.

The ClickBooth CPC platform is still new, and as new features and advertisers are added into the system, I know it could perform much better. Right now the mix of ad copy is just to scattered and the ability to add/remove offers isn’t available. If you had stats to show that the majority of your traffic is clicking 1 out of the 3 ad spots being shown, wouldn’t it be that much more beneficial to only serve ads for that individual offer? It would also make for a great case study to compare ClickBooth CPC against the same offers on ClickBooth as CPA offers with your own selection of offers and ad copy.

If you haven’t signed up already, join ClickBooth CPA or CPC and you’ll receive a free Apple iPad if you can generate $5,000 in your first 60 days. Simply leave “IPAD2010” in your application comments section.

Just as important as a great logo, a mascot can greatly help the branding and exposure of your company. Leaving a lasting impression in the minds of your site visitors or customers is crucial to having them remember your company. When I first launched ZacJohnson.com, I had a toon created of myself and it has worked extremely well for the branding and exposure of this site.

Let’s talk directly of mascots and not logos. Below I listed a few company mascots, with no mention of their company name. Do you recognize these companies and their actual name and products? If so, these companies were successful in their efforts to build a brandable mascot.

Just like old school companies like Disney and McDonalds that have used mascots to build their brand, new age companies like FreeCreditReport.com and Travelocity are doing the same with their television commercials. Who would have thought of a chihuahua promoting a company like Taco Bell? When you think of a dog, you would rather think about dog food than eating tacos! Not only is a mascot building a brand, but it may also bring a catchy tune that sticks in people’s heads (FreeCreditReport song), or just a fun likable character like the Travelocity gnome.

As more and more companies come up with new branding techniques, it’s always interesting to watch which stick around and fade away fast. ClickBooth actually just started their own mascot branding with “Clicky”, their Super Affiliate Hero. You can view the “Full Hollywood Story on Clicky” below.

What are some of your favorite mascots that you remember, and can you name all of the companies that belong to the mascots above?

It happens all the time… you just came up with a great idea for a new site or ad campaign, and can’t wait to get started. You register a domain, throw a site together and are working like crazy. The only problem is, you didn’t do your research first. I’m sure we are all guilty of doing this at some point, and I still even find myself getting excited over a new project prematurely. In the end, it always comes down to doing the necessary market research and finding what works in your niche.

Search any generic phrase on Google and you will likely see a ton of advertisers. The difference between having a successful and failing campaign may be seen in how many advertisers are bidding on that keyword, along with which advertisers are listed. Big name sites like eBay and Amazon can afford to bid on very generic terms because of their massive size, bank roll and user value over time. If you see only these two advertisers bidding on a search term, the “paid” competition may be tough, but if you find your search results coming up with a much diverse set of advertisers, you are more likely to find and create a successful ad campaign.

Using a keyword research tool called iSpionage, let’s choose a broad marker and take a look at the “as seen on tv” niche and see what stands outs.

Once you perform a search on your desired keyword phrase, you are given a full breakdown of top advertisers, ad spend, related keywords and ad copy used. From the results shown above, you can see almost all of the advertisers are from large well branded sites like QVC, HSN, AsSeenOnTV.com and Half.com. With this type of competition and high ppc costs (in the $4 range), it would be tough to break in and make a profit. The summary also shows 1968 related keywords and 224 PPC competitors.

The “As Seen on TV” market is so diverse, it is not a good investment for an affiliate to bid on such a generic word. Instead, you should focus your efforts on an individual product and see what results can be found. Next we will take a look at “patch perfect”, one of the better performing and well branded products in the “As Seen on TV” group.

Now that we are focused in on a tighter keyword we can see better results. Comparing advertiser search results on Google, “as seen on tv” vs. “patch perfect”, you will immediately see a difference in ads. Not only are ad listings now more direct and towards the purchase of one product, but the advertisers are more varied. Smaller independent advertisers are now listed, and you see less of the big name companies. You are targeting a much smaller niche, will less search traffic, but you also have less competition with 44 PPC Competitors listed, vs. the 224 in the first chart. Advertising on the term “patch perfect” will not only cost you less (“perfect patch” average cpc is in the $2.50 range), but it will also increase your chances on a conversion, vs. advertising on a generic keyword phrase like “as seen on tv”.

This is just an example, but you should now have a basic understanding of how to research, select a niche and break it down to find new keywords and less saturated markets to target.

Using this same thinking process, you can “spy” on an advertiser domain directly to see how they are managing their ad campaigns. Keeping with the same niche, let’s take a look at “asseenontv.com”.

It’s a lot of fun to look at charts from a direct advertiser perspective. While most of the numbers aren’t exact, you can get a good feel with how advertisers are spending their money and trends in search volume/spending. From the keyword list, you can see the advertiser is bidding on “stomach workouts”, then advertising their Ab Circle Pro product/landing pages on Google. A quick breakdown on the top keywords being bid on include cpc rates, search volume and how long the ads have actively been running.

Once you finally decide on your niche market and study the competition, your next focus would be on creating a keyword monitor list and setting up a ppc campaign.

Keyword Monitoring & Advertiser Competition
Using the keyword monitoring services from iSpionage, you can compare your ad campaigns against others in the industry. It’s not enough to know which keywords are bringing in the most search traffic or ROI… but instead, how much of a maximum potential each of these keywords has to offer.

Building a Campaign with What You’ve Learned
With everything now at hand, your collective data and research can be put to work. Create your new PPC campaign within minutes using the custom iSpionage PPC builder. If you’ve done manual campaign building in the past, you know how long this can take. Save time by building your campaign in 4 easy steps; Keyword Research, Clean Up, Grouping then simply creating and uploading the specific campaign for Google, Yahoo or Bing.

This is an overview of how to perform research and see what others are doing to bring in new customers through search marketing. The last thing you should be thinking about, is logging into your account, grabbing a ton of keywords, copying other advertiser’s ad copy and thinking you will make a profit. That simply isn’t the case. The keyword research is available, but you need to put the effort in to create a winning combination of terms, ad copy and landing pages.

To simplify creation of your PPC campaigns, try iSpionage and take advantage of their 7 day trial for only $1.

Wouldn’t it be great to know when others are talking about you or your web sites? Sure, blogs have pingbacks, but unless there is a link, you won’t know about it. Thanks to Google Alerts you can get a daily update whenever your personal name, business or site url is mentioned anyway. I’ve been using Google Alerts for quite a while now, and I’m sure many of you already know about it, but for those who don’t, read on.

Here’s a quick look at Google Alerts and how easy it is to setup

Search Terms: Whatever search term or web site you want to monitor, just fill it in this area.

Type: Comprehensive covers all areas, but you can change this to just target news, blogs, video etc.

How often and Deliver to are self explanatory. You can schedule alerts in real time, daily or weekly.

Once you have an alert setup, you’ll receive email alerts like the following. A link back to http://www.zacjohnson.com was featured in a post by Jonathan Volk, so I was sent an alert with the url and post title.

It’s Not Just About You!
Sure, Google Alerts works great to find out information about yourself and what others are saying, but it can also be used as a marketing tool. If you are looking to start a new web site or want to keep an eye on the competition, setup alerts and see how they are getting new backlinks and traffic to their web sites.

There’s no limit to how many reports you can setup, and it’s very easy to remove/add new alerts. If you haven’t already, give Google Alerts a try.

In the beginning there was email marketing, many focused on search marketing… and the latest craze is media buying. The reason why you have seen banner ads all over the place for weight loss ads and rebill offers, is because the most successful affiliates have been buying traffic on a CPM or CPV basis. If you put the time and work in, you can make a ton of money in media buying… without the heading of dealing with quality scores and other search marketing issues.

Jumping into media buying isn’t for everyone. Even small test ad campaigns can cost you a few thousand dollars up front. Where is a good media buying guide when you need one? Will from PPC Coach just went live with his new site, which focuses entirely on media buying. For anyone who isn’t familiar with PPC Coach, it’s one the best and most respected PPC learning programs around… and has helped many new affiliates and marketers generate a ton of money using PPC. Will is looking to do the same with Media Buys Coach.

The cost is $199 a month, and discounts are available if you choose a long term subscription. The opportunity to join is also limited to the first 200 members.

I just signed up (yes, I’m paying $199 a month) for my account and have full access. For anyone familiar with the PPC Coach platform, it’s pretty much the same thing. You will have access to videos, an active forum and new media buying tips each month.

The first month goes into details on how to setup an ad campaign on the Google Content network and expand your earnings to a few hundred dollars a day. This is a great program for anyone new to media buying, simply for the fact that you are walked through the entire process of what to do. You are given full landing pages, banners, and keywords to setup the campaign… then should repeat the process with other offers.

I’ll follow up in a couple weeks with how the program is looking as more members join.

One of our clients was approached by a snake oil SEO vendor—wanting to charge obscene amounts to list them in a directory that has no traffic. Below is our analysis with the charlatan’s name removed. You’ll probably think you know them, but that’s just because there are so many of these scammers.

We’ll start with a framework to evaluate the performance of Local Search, then measure this agency against it.

Great local search presence is measured by these points:
pages indexed > rankings > traffic generated > sales (conversions)

* Pages indexed is how many pages each of our locations are showing up in—directories, Google Local Business Center, blogs, review sites, third party offline sources, and so forth. The engines want to establish credibility, so they look at not just how many pages, but whether these listings are authoritative (measured by PageRank and other factors). Creation of pages in a directory that carries no authority is like building apartment buildings in the middle of the ocean– nobody will find them.
* Rankings—are we showing up first in geo-modified searches (for example, redondo beach pizza), whether in paid, map, or traditional organic searches? All 3 types of search are important, so it’s a matter of the ROI associated with efforts between these three. If our pages are indexed and carry “Google juice”, then we are likely to get boosted in search results.
* Traffic generated– this is where Google Analytics comes into play. There’s no sense in ranking on keywords that don’t get searched on. We can measure exactly how many incremental visitors we generate from any SEO efforts—just like we can on PPC.
* Conversions (revenue)—same store sales, online orders, email subscriptions, or any other verifiable actions. If the traffic came from a search engine, then we can track exactly what happened with that traffic, and that is a beautiful thing.

Some vendors would like to sell you directory listings and other “SEO” work, under the guise of rankings and ROI. Let’s look at some of the examples provided by one of these vendors and compare that against the measurement framework outlined above:

http://www.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com/airtran/USA/GA/airtran-atlanta-airport-hartsfield-jackson.html: This is their domain, at which they generate zillions of pages. The homepage has a Google PageRank of 0, the lowest possible score and one that conveys no trust. Further, the site has zero inbound links, meaning that no other website on the Internet is linking to them. Looking at their whois information, you can see the site was registered June 27, 2008—they are barely a year old.

Certainly you could pay whatever amount to have all of your company’s listings there, but that would be a waste. We could just as easily create a site called myfavoritepizzaplaces.com and do the same thing for $1k and do better. But really, that would be a pointless exercise. If the vendor was willing to list you for fun, you might go ahead, then in Google Analytics see how many visits you drive as a result of those listings, undoubtedly it will be zero.

You’ll see similar figures if you look at the other examples that they provide, such as xxxxxxxxxxx.com which has an Alexa rank of 743,111. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com has an Alexa of 912,757. xxxxxxxx.biz has an Alexa of 1,321,054.

Alexa rankings, if you’re not familiar with them, are what ranking you are on the web. So Google is #1, of course, followed by Yahoo! and all the other guys. Blitzlocal.com is 161,867. Even my personal blog, dennis-yu.com, is 134,980. These are publicly available figures, easy to check. We can go a step further to compete.com, quantcast.com, HitWise, and other ranking services—you’ll see the same picture. None of their listings sites get any traffic.

Companies like this shouldn’t be allowed to be in business, as they give legitimate companies a bad name. What’s especially frustrating is that search is perhaps the most measurable advertising medium that has ever existed, so you’d think that such vendors could be held accountable. When we speak at conferences on local search, there are usually a number of these vendors peddling wares such as this.

And they’ll claim Google, Yahoo, AOL, salesmanBing, and other players as their business partners. Just what do they mean by being a business partner?

* They’re just one of many folks who happen to use AdWords.
* They’re a wanna-be vendor calling into the general support line for PPC questions.
* They claim to have 3,000 businesses listed on their platform, when all that happened was uploading an Excel spreadsheet into their fake site with 3,000 records downloaded from another directory.

Are you still interested in these types of vendors? Try this before you give them any money: call them up and ask them if they are willing to stand behind their pitch of being a “partner” by being paid according to performance—to be able to demonstrate improvements at each of the steps mentioned above. They should be measured, at minimum, by the following:

* How many quality backlinks they’ve been able to generate.
* How much traffic came from those backlinks.
* How many conversions and how much revenue resulted from these efforts.

If the ROI of their efforts are truly that outstanding, they should have no hesitation to demonstrate what they do in that regard, plus be completely transparent about their techniques. The market for search consulting is so new that it may still be several years before clients are educated to the point that the charlatans can’t peddle their wares anymore.

Fortunately, there are measurable and valuable things we can do to improve local search results in an honest and measurable way:

* There are high trust directories that we can list ourselves in: for example, Best of the Web (perhaps the oldest and most trusted by the engines),
aviva.com, and judysbook.com in addition to the engine directories themselves (Google Local Business Center, plus Yahoo and Bing’s latest versions of this). There is a combination of manual and bulk submission techniques that we can use—not a lot of effort, but should help in areas that we don’t rank well. We can generate ranking reports to determine the impact of current versus improved rankings to measure the difference.
* PPC ads: Most likely already in play, but it can be taken to the next level by showing ads in map results—local business ads. This would take a few hours of our time to test the impact on Google, and then a few more hours to copy the campaigns over to Yahoo, BING (MSN), Ask, and other engines.
* Mobile: There are some quick changes we can implement on most existing sites to provide a tuned experience to iPhone users. We’ve seen many sites get well over 3% of their traffic from iPhone users, if there are quick changes that can increase conversions from these mobile users they should be made.

Are you looking for help optimizing your Local Search results? Contact us today and we can apply the analysis above to your site. Local is our specialty and we love sharing!

Feel free to check out his blog for killer information on all things that deal with Making Money Online.

This last week I must have had 10 or so people contact me on AIM letting me know that their Google Adwords account was banned.

People were freaking out because all of their revenue was suddenly turned off over night. People who were making hundreds of thousands of dollars, suddenly making nothing, with little opportunity to recover.

We’re not just talking about a, “Oh you can’t run that campaign” type of ban either. We’re talking, “If you create another account with that credit card, home address, ip address you will be banned again” type of banning.

Thankfully, this ban did not affect me but because it happened to a lot of good friends of mine, I wanted to take the time to write exactly what you should do in order to ensure that your account is not banned. I also want to write about some possibilities of things you should do if you are banned from Google Adwords.

Things you should avoid in order to keep your Google Adwords Account Safe!

Downloading and re-uploading slapped campaigns. – At times, when your campaign gets google slapped (meaning your ads stop showing no matter how high you bid), it can be an easy solution to simply buy a new domain, download your campaign and reupload using a new domain. Viola, new traffic… until your campaign is slapped again. Doing this over and over can get you banned faster than spamming make money online links on wickedfire. If your campaign stops receiving traffic, it’s probably due to the way your landing page / site is structured. Try reviewing ways of fixing your landing page quality score and go from there. Once you have changed your landing page significantly, you can try uploading it again. Here is a guide on downloading and uploading an adwords campaign with changes.

Stay away from Flogs. – Google literally will hate you if you try to promote a flog on their advertising network. If you don’t know what a flog is, it’s a fake blog testimonial site usually promoting some sort of recurring billing free trial such as a make money online type subscription program. This was one of the main sources of the banning this last week. People who promoted Flogs on Google, even after knowing they should not, were banned and asked never to return. This applied just as much to those spending MILLIONS per year as it did the Joe Schmo spending a hundred bucks a day.

Stay away from Google Cash Offers, Google Money Tree, etc. – Google recently decided that the affiliate offers that include their name such as Google Money Tree, are no longer ok to promote on their Adwords advertising network. I suppose promoting a product that is essentially using Google’s brand trust to sell is never a good idea to promote through Google. The banning that took place this week also were due to people who promoted the “Make Money Online with Google Cash Offer.” There are about 20 different offers, mostly owned by a few companies and these things are extremely popular. They use Google’s brand recognition (they even had Google’s logo on a few of the landing pages) to sell the idea that someone could make money using a system they’re already familiar with. Stay away from these offers now.

Play by Google’s Rules! – Sometimes you have to just make your methods conform to Google’s rules, even if that means less profit. Part of the make money online job description is learning to conform to the ever changing rule set while still… you know… making money.

What if Your Adwords Account was banned?
Sadly, there is not a whole lot you can do that does not require a whole lot of work.

First, you’ll need to reset your internet modem to acquire a new IP address. Next, you will need a brand new credit card. A spouse or employee card would suffice. Next, you’ll need to sign up for a new account and hope that it works. Lastly, follow the rules above – and keep watching this blog as well as Jonathan Volk’s blog for more tips on how to earn money online.

What would happen to your business if you were gone? Being an entrepreneur (especially with an online business), can hold some tough realizations about how the “day to day operations” were to run if you were no longer around. Unlike regular 9-5 jobs, or careers that can be trained into, we’ve spent our lives being the best at what we do. In most cases, our better half or family members wouldn’t have the knowledge to come in and keep things running… let alone even know where to start!

As grim as the subject may be, you always need to plan for the unexpected. If you haven’t already, here are a few things to think about while planning for the future of your business and financial security of your family if you were no longer around.

Passwords, Logins and Account Details
Personally, I have hundreds of usernames, passwords and urls all stored up in my head. When I see a certain web site layout, it just triggers whatever the password was that I setup for that account. Unfortunately, this would be nearly impossible for anyone else to handle that didn’t set up these account. It’s always a good idea to have a “written” booklet or note pad tucked away somewhere safely that contains all of the useful information to access your accounts. Whether it’s your affiliate accounts, banking records or billings… you don’t want to leave all of this information lost when your time comes.

Short Term vs. Long Term Business
Is your business model changing every week, or something that will make residual income for months with little maintenance? Even if you are generating almost all of your income from PPC marketing, this is an amazing skill to have, and once you are gone… your successful business is likely to follow. On the flip side, if you have a high traffic site, established brand or recurring income… all of these can still remain in tact and providing financial security for your family later on. Whether your business plan is short term, or has the potential to last for years… you need a backup plan to either have it bundled up and sold, or a way for someone to come in an maintain what you have started.

Recurring Billing, Ad Costs and Domains
Once again, this area can fall under having a document of all accounts and passwords. There is so much to think about when looking at our businesses as a whole. When are your domains expiring, are you pre-paid on hosting or paying monthly… what recurring charges are on your credit card that you will get billed for if they are used of not. This continuing list is a huge factor in whether your business will succeed if you are gone.

Business Model: What is it?
The most important factor to the success of your business, is your business model. It’s hard enough for us to explain to the “average person” what we do and how to make money… imagine being left with everything we started, and no idea where to start! When you are no longer the business, can someone step in and continue what you started? Should you have a “foster” entrepreneur to manage the business in your absence?

This is just the tip of the iceberg on what can be a massive list for some “one man” operations. The bottom line is… is your business model ready for the unthinkable and will it live on past your life time?

It’s not always the smartest, most funded or largest companies that succeed, but instead, those who do it better. Why are some affiliate networks better than others? The same reason why landing page A performs better than landing page B. To continually test and put forth the effort to do better than the competition, is the key to success.

iPhone 3G S vs. Flip Video
TechCrunch just wrote an article about how the new iPhone is going to destroy the Flip Video camcorder. The massive growth and attraction over the past couple years were phenomenal for the Flip Video. They found a way to make an awesome product, with a relatively low cost and people loved it. Their model was to make something small, simple and affordable… while being able to compete against the big guys like Canon and Nikon. Their business model has worked great, until the new iPhone 3G S just came out, which has it’s own built in video camera and editing capabilities. Now it’s Apple “doing it better“.

Flogs, Flogs and More Flogs
Whether you agree with the re-bill offers, or how they are being promoted, there is definitely a lot to learn from these marketers. In the beginning it was a few html pages with testimonials, now it’s full blogs with fake testimonials, with fake comments and pictures of their checks. With each new tweak, it slightly increases conversions that much more. Every week we are seeing brand new ways people are increasing conversions on these flog pages. Have you seen the new “newspaper” and “talking” flogs? Quite impressive!

The list goes on and on… but the key takeaway here, is that you don’t need to think of a new product or idea to make a few thousand, or even a couple hundred thousand dollars. You just need to find a way to DO IT BETTER! Look at your market, find your top competitors and see what you can do better and offer to your potential customers that they arent.

Now they have Superman 2.0 in Dwight Howard vs. the Laker’s “Black Mamba”, Kobe Bryant. The Lakers are heavily favored to win, but the Cavs were also heavily favored to destroy the Magic… and guess what happened!

Though I’m from NJ, I’ve always loved the Magic since I started watching basketball in 92, and went to my first game in Orlando in 95, then met Shaq and the whole team at a pub afterwards. I already got a few tickets to see the Magic play the 76ers in the first round, and I’m looking to make it down to Orlando for at least one of their home games during the finals.

I decided to throw together a quick contest for all of you NBA and sports fans out there to participate in. Simply post in the comments section, who you think will win the NBA Finals, in how many games, and the final score of the deciding game.

Your comment entry should look something like the following: (which is my official entry!)
Magic in 6 Games (110-76)

The entry with the closest correct answer, will win an authentic NBA player jersey of their choice, or a custom NBA jersey with your own Name and Number (any team). These run for $199.99 a piece at NBA.com. You may only enter once and must live within US or CANADA.
