Been Scammed by a Local Search Agency?

snake-oilOne of our clients was approached by a snake oil SEO vendor—wanting to charge obscene amounts to list them in a directory that has no traffic. Below is our analysis with the charlatan’s name removed. You’ll probably think you know them, but that’s just because there are so many of these scammers.

We’ll start with a framework to evaluate the performance of Local Search, then measure this agency against it.

Great local search presence is measured by these points:
pages indexed > rankings > traffic generated > sales (conversions)

* Pages indexed is how many pages each of our locations are showing up in—directories, Google Local Business Center, blogs, review sites, third party offline sources, and so forth. The engines want to establish credibility, so they look at not just how many pages, but whether these listings are authoritative (measured by PageRank and other factors). Creation of pages in a directory that carries no authority is like building apartment buildings in the middle of the ocean– nobody will find them.
* Rankings—are we showing up first in geo-modified searches (for example, redondo beach pizza), whether in paid, map, or traditional organic searches? All 3 types of search are important, so it’s a matter of the ROI associated with efforts between these three. If our pages are indexed and carry “Google juice”, then we are likely to get boosted in search results.
* Traffic generated– this is where Google Analytics comes into play. There’s no sense in ranking on keywords that don’t get searched on. We can measure exactly how many incremental visitors we generate from any SEO efforts—just like we can on PPC.
* Conversions (revenue)—same store sales, online orders, email subscriptions, or any other verifiable actions. If the traffic came from a search engine, then we can track exactly what happened with that traffic, and that is a beautiful thing.

Some vendors would like to sell you directory listings and other “SEO” work, under the guise of rankings and ROI. Let’s look at some of the examples provided by one of these vendors and compare that against the measurement framework outlined above:

copierhttp://www.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com/airtran/USA/GA/airtran-atlanta-airport-hartsfield-jackson.html: This is their domain, at which they generate zillions of pages. The homepage has a Google PageRank of 0, the lowest possible score and one that conveys no trust. Further, the site has zero inbound links, meaning that no other website on the Internet is linking to them. Looking at their whois information, you can see the site was registered June 27, 2008—they are barely a year old.

Certainly you could pay whatever amount to have all of your company’s listings there, but that would be a waste. We could just as easily create a site called myfavoritepizzaplaces.com and do the same thing for $1k and do better. But really, that would be a pointless exercise. If the vendor was willing to list you for fun, you might go ahead, then in Google Analytics see how many visits you drive as a result of those listings, undoubtedly it will be zero.

You’ll see similar figures if you look at the other examples that they provide, such as xxxxxxxxxxx.com which has an Alexa rank of 743,111. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com has an Alexa of 912,757. xxxxxxxx.biz has an Alexa of 1,321,054.

Alexa rankings, if you’re not familiar with them, are what ranking you are on the web. So Google is #1, of course, followed by Yahoo! and all the other guys. Blitzlocal.com is 161,867. Even my personal blog, dennis-yu.com, is 134,980. These are publicly available figures, easy to check. We can go a step further to compete.com, quantcast.com, HitWise, and other ranking services—you’ll see the same picture. None of their listings sites get any traffic.

Companies like this shouldn’t be allowed to be in business, as they give legitimate companies a bad name. What’s especially frustrating is that search is perhaps the most measurable advertising medium that has ever existed, so you’d think that such vendors could be held accountable. When we speak at conferences on local search, there are usually a number of these vendors peddling wares such as this.

And they’ll claim Google, Yahoo, AOL, salesmanBing, and other players as their business partners. Just what do they mean by being a business partner?

salesman* They’re just one of many folks who happen to use AdWords.
* They’re a wanna-be vendor calling into the general support line for PPC questions.
* They claim to have 3,000 businesses listed on their platform, when all that happened was uploading an Excel spreadsheet into their fake site with 3,000 records downloaded from another directory.

Are you still interested in these types of vendors? Try this before you give them any money: call them up and ask them if they are willing to stand behind their pitch of being a “partner” by being paid according to performance—to be able to demonstrate improvements at each of the steps mentioned above. They should be measured, at minimum, by the following:

* How many quality backlinks they’ve been able to generate.
* How much traffic came from those backlinks.
* How many conversions and how much revenue resulted from these efforts.

If the ROI of their efforts are truly that outstanding, they should have no hesitation to demonstrate what they do in that regard, plus be completely transparent about their techniques. The market for search consulting is so new that it may still be several years before clients are educated to the point that the charlatans can’t peddle their wares anymore.

Fortunately, there are measurable and valuable things we can do to improve local search results in an honest and measurable way:

* There are high trust directories that we can list ourselves in: for example, Best of the Web (perhaps the oldest and most trusted by the engines),
aviva.com, and judysbook.com in addition to the engine directories themselves (Google Local Business Center, plus Yahoo and Bing’s latest versions of this). There is a combination of manual and bulk submission techniques that we can use—not a lot of effort, but should help in areas that we don’t rank well. We can generate ranking reports to determine the impact of current versus improved rankings to measure the difference.
* PPC ads: Most likely already in play, but it can be taken to the next level by showing ads in map results—local business ads. This would take a few hours of our time to test the impact on Google, and then a few more hours to copy the campaigns over to Yahoo, BING (MSN), Ask, and other engines.
* Mobile: There are some quick changes we can implement on most existing sites to provide a tuned experience to iPhone users. We’ve seen many sites get well over 3% of their traffic from iPhone users, if there are quick changes that can increase conversions from these mobile users they should be made.

My Google Adwords Account Was Banned!

This guest by Jonathan Volk, a 20-something super affiliate who makes over $300,000 per month using pay per click advertising platforms. Feel free to check out his blog for killer information on all things that deal with Making Money Online.

This last week I must have had 10 or so people contact me on AIM letting me know that their Google Adwords account was banned.

People were freaking out because all of their revenue was suddenly turned off over night. People who were making hundreds of thousands of dollars, suddenly making nothing, with little opportunity to recover.

We’re not just talking about a, “Oh you can’t run that campaign” type of ban either. We’re talking, “If you create another account with that credit card, home address, ip address you will be banned again” type of banning.

Thankfully, this ban did not affect me but because it happened to a lot of good friends of mine, I wanted to take the time to write exactly what you should do in order to ensure that your account is not banned. I also want to write about some possibilities of things you should do if you are banned from Google Adwords.

Things you should avoid in order to keep your Google Adwords Account Safe!

  • Downloading and re-uploading slapped campaigns. – At times, when your campaign gets google slapped (meaning your ads stop showing no matter how high you bid), it can be an easy solution to simply buy a new domain, download your campaign and reupload using a new domain. Viola, new traffic… until your campaign is slapped again. Doing this over and over can get you banned faster than spamming make money online links on wickedfire. If your campaign stops receiving traffic, it’s probably due to the way your landing page / site is structured. Try reviewing ways of fixing your landing page quality score and go from there. Once you have changed your landing page significantly, you can try uploading it again. Here is a guide on downloading and uploading an adwords campaign with changes.
  • Stay away from Flogs. – Google literally will hate you if you try to promote a flog on their advertising network. If you don’t know what a flog is, it’s a fake blog testimonial site usually promoting some sort of recurring billing free trial such as a make money online type subscription program. This was one of the main sources of the banning this last week. People who promoted Flogs on Google, even after knowing they should not, were banned and asked never to return. This applied just as much to those spending MILLIONS per year as it did the Joe Schmo spending a hundred bucks a day.
  • Stay away from Google Cash Offers, Google Money Tree, etc. – Google recently decided that the affiliate offers that include their name such as Google Money Tree, are no longer ok to promote on their Adwords advertising network. I suppose promoting a product that is essentially using Google’s brand trust to sell is never a good idea to promote through Google. The banning that took place this week also were due to people who promoted the “Make Money Online with Google Cash Offer.” There are about 20 different offers, mostly owned by a few companies and these things are extremely popular. They use Google’s brand recognition (they even had Google’s logo on a few of the landing pages) to sell the idea that someone could make money using a system they’re already familiar with. Stay away from these offers now.
  • Play by Google’s Rules! – Sometimes you have to just make your methods conform to Google’s rules, even if that means less profit. Part of the make money online job description is learning to conform to the ever changing rule set while still… you know… making money.

What if Your Adwords Account was banned?
Sadly, there is not a whole lot you can do that does not require a whole lot of work.

First, you’ll need to reset your internet modem to acquire a new IP address. Next, you will need a brand new credit card. A spouse or employee card would suffice. Next, you’ll need to sign up for a new account and hope that it works. Lastly, follow the rules above – and keep watching this blog as well as Jonathan Volk’s blog for more tips on how to earn money online.

If Today Was Your Last Day

What would happen to your business if you were gone? Being an entrepreneur (especially with an online business), can hold some tough realizations about how the “day to day operations” were to run if you were no longer around. Unlike regular 9-5 jobs, or careers that can be trained into, we’ve spent our lives being the best at what we do. In most cases, our better half or family members wouldn’t have the knowledge to come in and keep things running… let alone even know where to start!

As grim as the subject may be, you always need to plan for the unexpected. If you haven’t already, here are a few things to think about while planning for the future of your business and financial security of your family if you were no longer around.

Passwords, Logins and Account Details
Personally, I have hundreds of usernames, passwords and urls all stored up in my head. When I see a certain web site layout, it just triggers whatever the password was that I setup for that account. Unfortunately, this would be nearly impossible for anyone else to handle that didn’t set up these account. It’s always a good idea to have a “written” booklet or note pad tucked away somewhere safely that contains all of the useful information to access your accounts. Whether it’s your affiliate accounts, banking records or billings… you don’t want to leave all of this information lost when your time comes.

Short Term vs. Long Term Business
Is your business model changing every week, or something that will make residual income for months with little maintenance? Even if you are generating almost all of your income from PPC marketing, this is an amazing skill to have, and once you are gone… your successful business is likely to follow. On the flip side, if you have a high traffic site, established brand or recurring income… all of these can still remain in tact and providing financial security for your family later on. Whether your business plan is short term, or has the potential to last for years… you need a backup plan to either have it bundled up and sold, or a way for someone to come in an maintain what you have started.

Recurring Billing, Ad Costs and Domains
Once again, this area can fall under having a document of all accounts and passwords. There is so much to think about when looking at our businesses as a whole. When are your domains expiring, are you pre-paid on hosting or paying monthly… what recurring charges are on your credit card that you will get billed for if they are used of not. This continuing list is a huge factor in whether your business will succeed if you are gone.

Business Model: What is it?
The most important factor to the success of your business, is your business model. It’s hard enough for us to explain to the “average person” what we do and how to make money… imagine being left with everything we started, and no idea where to start! When you are no longer the business, can someone step in and continue what you started? Should you have a “foster” entrepreneur to manage the business in your absence?

This is just the tip of the iceberg on what can be a massive list for some “one man” operations. The bottom line is… is your business model ready for the unthinkable and will it live on past your life time?

How To Do It Better

It’s not always the smartest, most funded or largest companies that succeed, but instead, those who do it better. Why are some affiliate networks better than others? The same reason why landing page A performs better than landing page B. To continually test and put forth the effort to do better than the competition, is the key to success.

iPhone 3G S vs. Flip Video
TechCrunch just wrote an article about how the new iPhone is going to destroy the Flip Video camcorder. The massive growth and attraction over the past couple years were phenomenal for the Flip Video. They found a way to make an awesome product, with a relatively low cost and people loved it. Their model was to make something small, simple and affordable… while being able to compete against the big guys like Canon and Nikon. Their business model has worked great, until the new iPhone 3G S just came out, which has it’s own built in video camera and editing capabilities. Now it’s Apple “doing it better“.

Flogs, Flogs and More Flogs
Whether you agree with the re-bill offers, or how they are being promoted, there is definitely a lot to learn from these marketers. In the beginning it was a few html pages with testimonials, now it’s full blogs with fake testimonials, with fake comments and pictures of their checks. With each new tweak, it slightly increases conversions that much more. Every week we are seeing brand new ways people are increasing conversions on these flog pages. Have you seen the new “newspaper” and “talking” flogs? Quite impressive!

The list goes on and on… but the key takeaway here, is that you don’t need to think of a new product or idea to make a few thousand, or even a couple hundred thousand dollars. You just need to find a way to DO IT BETTER! Look at your market, find your top competitors and see what you can do better and offer to your potential customers that they arent.

NBA Finals Contest: Magic vs. Lakers

Normally I wouldn’t post about sports, but my favorite NBA team, the Orlando Magic, are in the playoffs once again! It’s only been 15 years since they last (and first time) made the finals, and that was when they had Shaq. Now they have Superman 2.0 in Dwight Howard vs. the Laker’s “Black Mamba”, Kobe Bryant. The Lakers are heavily favored to win, but the Cavs were also heavily favored to destroy the Magic… and guess what happened!

Though I’m from NJ, I’ve always loved the Magic since I started watching basketball in 92, and went to my first game in Orlando in 95, then met Shaq and the whole team at a pub afterwards. I already got a few tickets to see the Magic play the 76ers in the first round, and I’m looking to make it down to Orlando for at least one of their home games during the finals.

I decided to throw together a quick contest for all of you NBA and sports fans out there to participate in. Simply post in the comments section, who you think will win the NBA Finals, in how many games, and the final score of the deciding game.

Your comment entry should look something like the following: (which is my official entry!)
Magic in 6 Games (110-76)

The entry with the closest correct answer, will win an authentic NBA player jersey of their choice, or a custom NBA jersey with your own Name and Number (any team). These run for $199.99 a piece at NBA.com. You may only enter once and must live within US or CANADA.

The deadline for entries is GAME 2, which takes place on June 7th.

NBA Finals Schedule is Below:

- Game 1: Thursday, June 4 – Orlando at L.A. – 9PM ET on ABC
- Game 2: Sunday, June 7 – Orlando at L.A. – 8PM ET on ABC
- Game 3: Tuesday, June 9 – L.A. at Orlando – 9PM ET on ABC
- Game 4: Thursday, June 11 – L.A. at Orlando – 9PM ET on ABC
- Game 5*: Sunday, June 14 – L.A. at Orlando – 8PM ET on ABC
