Facebook Ads versus Google AdWords

This guest post was written by Harrison Gevirtz, whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with at various events, such as Affiliate Summit and EliteRetreat. You can read more on Harrison and what he’s currently working on at his blog.

We run campaigns on both systems, often copying from one to the other.   There’s no simple import utility that will copy campaigns between systems, like you can from Google to Yahoo.  There likely never will be– since the traffic is so different. Some key differences:

  • Google has keywords– millions of themFacebook has profile variables– perhaps a few thousand, if you look at DK’s list of top Facebook keywords. PPC keywords provide intent– what the user is looking for now, while profile variables tell you what the user likes– typically music and TV shows– but not what they want right now.  The timing of when they want something is what makes AdWords convert well, while the demographic capabilities of social ads lets you target WHO they are.
  • Use the indirect method on Facebook. While you’d perhaps buy “weight loss” on AdWords or YSM, on Facebook you would instead buy the TV shows that middle aged females would most likely watch– The Biggest Loser, even.  Speaking of weight loss, the user might be a Denver liposuction doctor, but you wouldn’t know that on Google when they’re searching. If you’re buying a professional service term to target funeral directors, you can’t even do that on Google– you can’t tell who is looking for a funeral director versus who actually is one.
  • Facebook ads are WAY cheaper. It’s a new system, they don’t have a public API, the user base is still mostly kids. But if you hit the right niches, you can get traffic for a fraction of PPC pricing. For example, SpyFu says garage sales costs 26 to 55 cents a click, but you know that you can get 5-10 cent clicks on Facebook for folks who have garage sales as one of their interests.
  • But volume varies: If you are targeting by interest, you won’t get many clicks.  If you are an affiliate marketing network running acai berry– and you can get the ad approved– at 10 cents a click and a $40 payout, you can’t lose.  You’d need one click in 400 to convert, but your volume would be low. The bid strategy we use on Facebook is somewhat similar to Google– bid high and then gradually lower bids by a couple pennies at a time. If you drop it too fast, your traffic will dry up.
  • Make LOTS of ads: Facebook doesn’t take into account the number of ads in a campaign when testing the eCPM of new ads.  In other words, as new ads come into the system, they have to allocate a certain number of impressions to determine whether that ad will earn them money– based on the CTR and average CPC (which is eCPM). So set up dozens of ads– both to get more impressions, plus to test combinations of image, headline, targeting variable, and landing page.  If you have 2 of each, that’s 2 to the 4th power, which is 16 variations. The great news here is that once you find a combination that works, your earnings can be sustainable.  Other affiliates can copy your ads, but what’s the chance they have the same combination of variables?
  • Make lots of money: There’s plenty of money out there for folks who work hard and systematically test.  Questions?  Read my affiliate marketing blog.

Ad Copy: Going for the Click, or the Sale?

Is your ad copy pullin in the right visitors for you? While many of us want to create great ad copy that makers the user click, the end goal should be to make them convert. Let’s take a look at a real time example, and how different ad copy compares.

To see a variation of what advertisers are using in their ad copy, I went to Google and did a general search for “make money“. This is a very basic search phrase, but also highly competitive. The first two listings were both about how to make money, but had different goals in mind. (I have no affiliation with the two sites/campaigns below, just using them as examples)

Ad Copy Clicks vs. Conversions Key Points:
Right off the bat, you can see that the ad copy for ProjectPayDay (PP) is trying to grab the users attention, by saying “Make Money Online – Free” as their main link. This applies to almost everyone… who wouldn’t want to make free money. The ad copy then goes into details on how much you can make with the program.

The title tage for sixfigureincomeforu.com (SFIFU) is more low key, but doesn’t flash the word “free” out there. The description is where the value is. Instead of giving general information and telling the user it’s “free”, they actually list a price it will cost the consumer. This will scare away any visitors who did not want to spend money, hence saving the advertiser on a wasted click.

What’s the End Goal for Your Campaign?
ProjectPayday’s end goal is to get “free” sign ups on their site. In turn, these free signups are then pushed to complete various different offer, which PP will then split a portion with. In the end, the visitor will still have to use their credit card at some point to make money, but not directly with PP.

SFIFU is out there strictly to push the sale and get people who are interested in spending around $70 to make money online. They are not looking for free signups, or to build a mailing list… they just want the sale.

What You Should Walk Away With:
While it’s likely both of these ad campaigns are profitable, since they have been running for a while and are in top positions… if they were to change their ad copies, their revenue/profit numbers could swing dramatically. If PP was to throw into their ad copy that you eventually had to use your credit card, click rates would probably drop. On the flip side, if SFIFU changed their ad copy and didn’t include that it would cost “under $70″, their conversion rate on purchases would dramatically drop.

Is your ad campaign focusing on bringing in the clicks, or new customers looking to buy?

Tracking 202 Pro Version Released

The affiliate tracking software that has changed the way we track campaigns, just got even better. With Tracking202 and Prosper202 being out for over a year now, and with nothing buy rave reviews, we’ve all been looking forward to the Pro Version of Tracking202. I met up with Wes at Affiliate Summit West 2009, and we spoke breifly about it, but now that’s it’s live, you can see what it’s really all about.

What Can Tracking 202 Pro Do?
I won’t get into the nitty gritty on what Tracking202 is. In short it’s a full service tracking solution for all of your ppc/affiliate marketing needs. What’s great about using Tracking202 Pro is that you can sync up all of your ppc marketing through the BIG 3, along with all of your accounts and stats from all of the major affiliate networks. With these capabilities in place, you don’t have to keep logging into multiple networks for your latest stats, you can view it all through Tracking202 Pro. This is just the tip of the iceberg on features and what Tracking 202 has to offer, view their “features” page for a full rundown. If you are an iPhone and stats junkie, they even have a web application to check your stats on the go.

How Much Does the Pro Version Cost?
When Wes and Tracking 202 first came out, everything was free… even the downloadable version to install and run on your own servers. Now that the Pro Version is out, it’s actually interesting to see how well they will fare with a new business model. Unlike other tracking programs where they charge a high monthly fee for everyone, Tracking 202 Pro bills based on usage.

For those of you worried or scared about actually paying for a tracking service, you shouldn’t be. Try it out on a few of your campaigns and see if it helps improve your ad campaigns and relieves a few headaches. At the least, just give it a test run with their 7 day free trial, and send up to 2,000 clicks through your campaigns for just $19.95.

Why Pay, When the Previous Tracking 202 Was Free?
I’ve already signed up for my account, and I especially don’t mind paying for the service since Wes and his provided such a quality product that was free. In addition to all of the features included in the previous free versions, you also get the ease of not having to deal with your own server hosting for tracking (landing pages, you will need hosting for), tracking, redirects and other issues. The Pro version eliminates a lot of headaches that you come across as an affiliate marketer, while giving you a great looking interface.

Tracking 202 Pro – Free 7 Day Trial
Save 10% for 3 Months – Coupon Code: ZACJOHNSON
For anyone interested in viewing their ad campaigns and affiliate network stats in a whole new way, Tracking 202 is offering a free 7 day trial. If you haven’t already, give them a run for a few days, look around their backend and see what you think. Worst case scenerio? You gave it a shot and it didn’t cost you anything. Best case scenario? You possibly find a new tracking solution to help increase you monthly revenue by 400%!?

If you are already working with the Tracking 202 Pro version, feel free to leave any comments or suggesstions. I’m sure Wes and his team are looking forward to positive and negative feedback.

5 Simple Ways to Increase Click Through Rates

No matter what type of ad campaign you are running, click through rates are an important step in measuring the success of a campaign. Having a high click through rate on ad platforms such as Facebook and Google Adwords will not only lower your costs per click, but can also increase your ad volume. Increasing your click through rates for links on your web site or blog is also important, as it usually will lead to more revenue.

I wrote up a few tips for increasing the click performance of ad campaigns. These are not focused on any one specific marketing method, but written to make your think twice about your campaigns and how you can improve them.

Tempting Your Readers
Instead of telling your viewer what a product, or service is… instead grab their attention and get them wanting to know more. When you see an awesome movie trailer, aren’t you just dieing to see the full movie? You can do the same thing with your advertising.

TEMPTING: “I Found This Amazing New Weight Loss Formula”
NOT TEMPING: “Product X Will Help You Lose Weight”

What’s the Benefit of Clicking
No matter what you are  doing online, there is always an end goal or purpose. Usually people are looking for information, or simply to be entertained. Either way, if you are lucky enough to have someone take a few seconds to look at your ad, you want to make it clear to them what they are getting, in response to clicking your ad.

BENEFIT: “Click Here for Money Savings Tips”
NO BENEFIT: “Click Here to Visit My Site”

Advertising Works Best, When It’s Not Advertising
Nobody wants to see an advertisement, it’s a distraction from a users experience. Making your advertising more relevant and obtrusive to your site visitor is a major part of your sites success. This has been one of the most well known and successful methods for web sites to make money with Google Adsense. Instead of placing advertisements on your site that try and stand right out to the user, try blending in your ad copy with your articles and web content.

EFFECTIVE: “Text Placement with Content, or Side Menus”
NOT EFFECTIVE: “Big Red & Yellow 468×60 Flashing Banner Ad”

Setting Limitations on Your Offers
We’ve all seen late night infomercials, and I’ve always found it humorous when they say, “call in the next five minutes to save…“. It may seem funny, but they still wouldn’t be doing it if it didn’t work. People want to make the call within the next five minutes, because they think they are getting an extra value if they act now. Add something to your ad copy to make the user want to take action now.

LIMITED: “Today Only: Save 25% on All Orders before Midnight!”
NOT LIMITED: “Save 25% on Your Next Purchase”

Matching Up Ads with Relevant Content
Showing your advertisements along side related content is almost a no brainer. Unfortunately, so many web sites still completely ignore this issue. How many times have you visited a web site, reading an article, then you see completely non-relevant advertisements on the site. Sure, it will take more time and effort to place relevant advertisements, but in the long run, your readers interaction with the ads will increase heavily.

RELEVANT: “Insurance Ads on a Health/Finance Site”
NOT RELEVANT: “Insurance Ads on a Teen Gaming Site”

These are just a few methods you should be using to increase your click through rates. I will cover more tips in a future post.

Hotel Success with Hotwire.com

When using a service for the first time, it’s rare for everything to work out and go smoothly. To make a long story short, last minute, I had to head over to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ for the night and needed two hotel rooms. I was quoted a rate of $180 a night from the Hyatt. However, I was previously told hospital visitors get rooms for around $110 a night. Unfortunately the staff member who mentioned the special rate, wasn’t there when I needed to book. I instead went online and used Hotwire.com for the first time.

The crazy thing about Hotwire.com, is that they show you a listing of hotels by star ratings, and their price ranges. The part that is crazy, is that they don’t tell you the name of the hotel you are staying at until you pay and book your stay. You can select your hotel results by location, but it’s still a toss up.

I took my chance and went for the 4 star rating hotel, listed at $65 a night. Pow! They gave me two rooms at the Hyatt for a super discounted rate! Instant savings of nearly $200 for the two rooms from booking with the Hyatt directly!

As mentioned, this is the first time I’ve used Hotwire.com, and it was a great success. I will definitely be using their service again. Next time I might not get the hotel I was hoping for, but the discounts are amazing.

If you are an affiliate and looking to save a few dollars, you could sign up through your own affiliate link and earn an extra 2%. The Hotwire.com affiliate program is run through Linkshare. Then use an American Express Plum Card and save another 2% on top of that!

Just wanted to write a quick post on Hotwire.com and let you know about my success with them, should you need a quick hotel stay for your next business or pleasure event.
