Behavior of Dating Traffic and the Banner that Hooks Them

First of all, from my experiences, banners work great in almost every vertical, but they work particularly well in dating campaigns.  Dating traffic is especially keen on visualization.  People don’t go to dating sites to read articles or to shop for electronics.  They are there because they are bored, and these sites provide an extremely low investment way for them to waste their time.  They can sit in their boxers, hop on, and send 10 messages in 10 minutes.

Let me explain this state of being: the users are completely non-committal, and self-will and purpose go out the window.  They are not on there to accomplish anything in particular.  They didn’t get on with the mission of sending 10 messages a day.  They got on that day and happen to send 10 messages because they felt like it at the moment; because they were bored and they saw 10 boys or girls who were cute.  In this state, they are very easily distracted.  It’s almost as if they purposefully contracted the shiny object syndrome, and are now asking you to: “Please distract me!

Remember how people say human beings think about sex every 6 seconds?  Well, on dating sites, it’s going on just about every second.  That’s why with an effective banner that hooks the user the right way, you will see click-through rates that are much higher than on traditional social media sites.  Before a user will ever click on your ad, guess what, they have to look at it.  How do you get them to do that?  There are three things that control this: positioning, differentiation, and size.

Positioning refers to where the ad is.  If the ad space is below the fold on most people’s screens, I will never purchase that space unless I know below the fold is where most of the user activities occur.  Fully understand the real estate that you are purchasing and use it to your advantage.  For example, if your ad always appears by a user’s message compose page, try pointing an arrow at the “To” line and say “Why message her when I’m online now? Click me to say hi.”

Differentiation refers to the ad’s ability to standout in the context of the page.  A sure way to get someone to see your ad is to be annoying as possible with flashing animations and blinding colors, but not only will it likely be against the policy of the site, it will also likely annoy the user into not clicking.  The ad should give the user a positive feeling.  There’s not much to the last point, but the simple fact is that the bigger the ad is, the better the performance.

So now you’ve gotten a glance from your target user, congrats, you’ve earned a split-second attention-span equivalent to that of a 6 year old.  To attract their attention for a second longer, your banner needs to have a visual focal point.  I’m sure there are some genius marketers out there that have figured out some very specific types of images that work well for certain types of traffic, but the tried and true way of getting high CTR’s on dating ads is to sell sex and fantasy, because that’s what coincides with the instant gratification mindset of the users on the site, both male and female.

Let’s not beat around the bush: for men, breasts and butts work.  Get the most revealing images while still adhering to your traffic source’s guidelines.  For females, it’s a little trickier.   Muscles definitely do well, but key to their hearts is selling them a fantasy.  Whether it’s a firefighter fantasy, a doctor fantasy, or a wealthy man fantasy, there has to be some unique hook that gets their mental juices flowing.  But the most important rule of thumb to my suggestions above is this: the images must be believable.  Amateur images have again and again outperformed professional images.  The reason is the viewer can more easily believe and imagine the pictured person being real.  They actually think they will meet this person if they click.  The more real you can make this person seem the better.  It could be saying where they’re from, showing their online status, showing when they last logged in, or displaying how many messages they’ve received in the last 24 hours.

Along the same lines, keep your banner real by keeping it SIMPLE.  I cannot stress that enough.  The vast majority of banners out there are too crowded.  Designers often have trouble leaving space.  They think they must use the space given and when possible make the canvas fancier.  There are banners with elaborate borders, too many colors, and too many places the viewer is supposed to look when they should only look twice: the image and then a short copy.  There shouldn’t be much else distracting them.  The more elaborate your banner the more the user is aware that it’s a banner.  They don’t care about the design; they really just care about the image.  And lastly, never underestimate the power of white space, particularly in a crowded site.

For your copy, again keep it simple.  You shouldn’t be writing a paragraph outlining the features of the site you’re promoting.  The users have such a short attention span that you’re lucky if you can push one thought through their head.  Write a captivating headline that focuses on ONE, not two, unique proposition.  What is the one thing that you want to get across with your add?  If you have a photo of a firefighter, you better be promising them something congruent with that.  Speak directly to your audience as if you are the ad and you are sitting right in front of them.  Engage them.  End it with a call to action.

I hope that gives you a clearer approach to banner ads for your dating campaigns.  Get out there, make a bunch of ads, and start testing.  There’s no better teacher than seeing thousands of failed ads through your own test over time.

How I Make Over $1,000 an Hour Blogging!

Wait, does the title of the post really say what I think it says? Yes, actually it does! It is possible to make $1,000 in an hour from blogging, but you can’t expect an immediate payout like that right away. But it’s still very possible, let me explain…

In my last post, “How Much Do Bloggers Really Make?“, I talked about how some of the bloggers in our industry and making lots of money with their blogs. From a few hundred a month to several thousands of dollars, it’s all possible through consistent blogging and with a longterm goal in mind. Just look at the monthly reports from the bloggers who were featured in my last post. Compare their blogging revenue with your goals and put together a plan about how you can do the same.

Enough about the other bloggers… tell me how I can make $1,000 an hour blogging! Ok, ok… back to my post topic!

How long does it take you to write a really good quality post? Probably around an hour or so, depending on the complexities and depth of the post.

Now let’s take a look at a two of my most read posts I’ve written over the past few years.

Both of these posts were loaded up with great content, and they offered a lot of value to the end reader.

In the landing page post, I walked the reader through the process of how to create a great landing page, but also provided them with a nice template I created. Since going live with that post, the template has been downloaded thousands of time.

The second post was a very detailed tutorial on how to create your first ppc campaign, walking the reader through the process step by step.

So big deal… I wrote two great blog posts, how the heck did they end up making $1,000+ in an of blogging? Simple, in each of these post I provided value to the reader, then ended up getting shared on various blogs, and I also used an example in each of the blog posts, which was Neverblue affiliate network. In each of the posts I selected a different offer from Neverblue and walked the user through the process of how to create a new ad campaign, or a landing page.

The result… after thousands upon thousands of people have read through these pages, hundreds of them went on to join Neverblue and start making money with the marketing efforts I suggested. Since going live with the blog, I’ve sent over $2 million in new affiliate business to Neverblue. As a referral to their network, I get a small commission from all referrals.

The earnings from Neverblue isn’t the big deal here… the point I am stressing is that through these super valuable and high quality posts, I’ve been able to make money every day, week, month and year since they went live… so in the end, that one hour or so I spent writing the post and putting the content together, ended up making well over $1,000 per post. Best of all, all of the traffic to these pages are through free traffic sources such as search results and other blogs linking in to the content, so it’s all profit and continual longterm growth.

Secrets to Making $1,000 an Hour Writing Killer Blog Posts

I’ll be the first to tell you that the majority of blog posts you write will never make any where near $1,000 in earnings, nor should they. The majority of posts I publish on this blog are to spread awareness, information and help people make money online. With over 900 posts written on this blog in the past few years, there is probably less than ten posts that have went on to generate four figures on their own, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do the same.

Here are the secrets to create posts that will generate traffic, revenue and sales for you month after month.

  • Focus on building quality content that provides a solution (tutorial or how to guides)
  • Use examples and resources in your posts that you can earn a commission on.
  • Don’t push sales or products down your viewers throats, use them only as examples.
  • Testimonials and real life examples are key, preach what you know works.

I’m sure some of you are disappointed with the answer to “How Do I Make $1,000 an Hour Blogging?“, but it’s the honest truth and it works. Yes, I used an affiliate network and referrals as an example for this post, but there are many other posts I’ve written that are based on the same concept, but used on different products and services.

If you currently have your own blog or web site, instead of asking yourself how you can make a quick buck, focus your efforts on building quality content that will solve a problem and continue to generate new traffic and revenue for you month after month. This same business model works within any niche. So get to it!

Justin Germino – DragonBlogger

[T]he interesting thing to point out is that this was my highest earning month yet not my highest traffic month which shows that earnings can increase without traffic increasing.

Ana Hoffman – Traffic Generation Cafe

I made it my priority to work on improving rankings for my product reviews specifically, but also other posts that have great potential to capture a high number of Google users. … This [2012] will be the year for me to turn Traffic Generation Cafe from a hobby into a business.

TriNi – Make Money Online Free

I recently started back college, trying to finish my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (Accounting) . . . and also still working full time and taking care of a household, life has kept me pretty busy! However, I have still been making money online from this blog …

Pat Flynn – Smart Passive Income

November was a good reminder, once again, that diversity is extremely important. … November and December are historically the slowest month’s for sales on the website – professionals aren’t studying during the Holidays . . . the environment you work in has a major impact on your work flow and productivity.

Laura – Passive Income from Your Dorm

There are many ways that you can earn money from your dorm room. I’ve decided to write this blog for those of us in a position of trying to earn money while in school. Ultimately, I hope to be able to look back . . . and state that I am earning my entire income online.

Eric – My 4-Hour Workweek

If I had to pick a word that sums up my past couple months of online work, it would be this: irony. Both December and November were highly productive months, yet somehow, they have led to two of my lowest consecutive earning months. [*]

The quote is from Eric’s end of year report, however, the earnings report linked to here is one in which he discusses how his earnings were affected by the Google Panda update.

Make Money with the Audible.com Affiliate Program

The world is changing… as more people flock to the internet for their needs, we all become a bit more digital. As more retail locations close, we can see it coming… online is the way to go. With the recent closings of Border and millions of other book stores around the world, the days of print books are diminishing… but that doesn’t mean people aren’t reading books anymore, it just means they are finding new ways to read them.

Amazon.com has always been the web’s online store for everything, but books is where they started… and they still dominate the niche. Amazon knows the future of books is through digital print and audio, that is exactly why they purchased Audible.com in 2008 for a whopping $300 million dollars. Four years later and it looks like Amazon made the right choice!

So why does this matter, and how can you start making money with digital and audio books? Through the Audible.com affiliate program of course.

Just like Amazon saw a ton of value in Audible, you can use their web site to earn commissions on all referred sales and download of audio books. Audible downloads work on nearly any device, and anywhere… so this gives you a lot of options to play with in marketing. And since the company is already owned by Amazon.com, it brings that “brand name” that everyone trusts to the table.

Audible.com Affiliate Payout Structure

Just like the Amazon.com affiliate program pays you on sales, you can earn commissions the same way through Audible. Should someone come along a make a purchase for a book title or other product, the affiliate will earn a 10% commission on that sale. The higher commissions are on the actual membership based services offered by Audible. A free trial will earn you a $10 commission, while an actual signup will bring in $25 in commissions.

How to Promote and Make Money with Audible.com

When it comes to selling books (paper or digital), there is almost no limit to the amount of successful marketing methods. A few that come to mind are as simple as creating a book review web site or blog, then blending Audible digital download links within your content. You can then grow out your blog by targeting people on Facebook Ads (with a fan page), which can then contribute and share reviews on your blog. This is a longer term model, as it will take time to grow out and establish your site, but it could continue to bring in a nice recurring income month after month.

Speaking of Facebook Ads, let’s take a look at how you can start running Audible right now without the need to create a web site or blog.

First, take a look at the best sellers list on Audible.com. The #1 selling book at the moment is “Mockingjay: The Final Book of The Hunger Games (UNABRIDGED)by Suzanne Collins“. Now, using that information, let’s head over to Facebook Ads and see how many people we can target that are interested in “Suzanne Collins”.

Excellent… Facebook Ads tells us there are 25,760 people who live in the United States, age 18 and older who like #Suzanne Collins. ( mock ad copy screenshot on right)

Now we can create a quick little ad to promote the book and push it to people WE KNOW like to read books, and enjoy Suzanne Collins books specifically.

Of course 25k people isn’t the biggest target, but they are already a pre-screened targeted audience, and look at how scalable this can be… replicate the process with all books on Audible.com and compare results.

When it comes to promote authors, books and digital downloads, your marketing options are limitless. Join the Audible.com affiliate program and try out the offers for yourself.

Affiliate Marketing Tips at AffiliatePrograms.com and PPC.org

You may have noticed a bit of a lag between blog posts lately. The main reason is because I have a lot of different projects going on, and I’ve actually been writing on multiple different sites, in addition to starting up a few new ones of my own.

As awesome as affiliate marketing is, and creating ad campaigns for other companies to reap the long term benefits, through the years I’ve gradually been moving over to creating my own products and web sites, which continue to build long term value and income. Through this model you are not only building your own business and brand, but you also are no longer aren’t held hostage by networks, advertisers and their various advertising terms and conditions.

Let’s take a look at a few of the sites I’ve been working on, and writing at.

AffiliatePrograms.com

In December 2011, I started writing for AffiliatePrograms.com, which has been a fun and eventful job so far. It feels like I’m writing for their site more than mine half the time, as I’m posting there three times a week. A lot of the posts I’ve been writing on their blog have been focused on tutorials and different methods of advertising and monetization. In addition to writing for their site, I’m also putting together a nice affiliate intro guide for their site, which will be released soon.

I’ve listed a few of the posts I’ve written below.

PPC.org

In addition to writing for this blog, bloggingtips.com and affiliateprograms.com, I also acquired the domain name PPC.org a few months ago and finally found some time to start putting it together. The site has quickly become a top 60,000 Alexa resource for everything relating to online marketing, search advertising and improving overall conversions.

This site is still in development, but look for some exciting changes and resources in the coming weeks. In just the past couple months of going live, the PPC.org writing team has already published over 300 unique quality articles.

Again, I’ve listed a few of the posts written on PPC.org below.

Future Plans…

With the launch of ppc.org and a few other sites, I’ve been pretty busy with the overall content and building of these sites. In the next few weeks to months, we will be releasing some cool tools, guides, wordpress themes and training programs for affiliate marketers to improve their overall knowledge and skills to making money online.

Be sure to check both of these sites out and let me know what you think.
